Dubai schools will soon face a new era of accountability and quality assurance. As the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) prepares to resume school inspections from the 2026-27 academic year.
Under a renewed inspection framework, schools across the emirate will receive no more than 24 hours’ notice before quality assurance teams arrive on campus. The move aims to provide a more accurate picture of everyday school life. It supports continuous improvement across Dubai’s education sector.
The announcement marks the return of formal quality assurance activities after KHDA paused inspections during the 2025-26 academic year. It allows schools greater flexibility to focus on improvement and collaboration.
New Inspection System Introduced for Dubai Schools
KHDA has unveiled a differentiated quality assurance model that introduces two types of school visits. It will evaluate educational standards and provide targeted support where needed.
The first type is a full quality-assurance inspection conducted by a team of specialists using the UAE School Inspection Framework. Following the visit, schools will receive a comprehensive inspection report along with an updated overall school rating. Schools completing their third year of operation in Dubai will automatically undergo this full inspection process.
The second type is a monitoring visit, which will be carried out by a smaller team of experts. These visits will focus on specific areas identified through data analysis and school performance indicators. British Curriculum Schools will also receive a concise report highlighting strengths and recommendations for improvement, although no new overall rating will be issued.
Why KHDA Is Giving Schools Only 24 Hours’ Notice
According to KHDA, short-notice inspections help inspectors observe schools in their normal operating environment. The authority believes the approach will provide a more authentic assessment of:
- Teaching quality
- Student learning outcomes
- School leadership
- Student wellbeing
- Daily school operations
By reducing preparation time, KHDA hopes to ensure feedback reflects the genuine educational experience delivered to students every day. The model also aligns with international best practices adopted by leading educational quality assurance bodies worldwide.
Supporting Dubai’s Education 33 Strategy
The renewed inspection program forms part of Dubai’s broader educational transformation goals under the Education 33 (E33) Strategy, which places students at the center of the learning experience and aims to provide high-quality education for all learners.
The initiative also supports the ambitions of:
- Dubai Plan 2033
- Dubai Economic Agenda (D33)
- Dubai Social Agenda
Together, these strategies aim to position Dubai among the world’s top 10 cities for educational quality and student outcomes.

What Happened During the Inspection Pause?
Although annual inspections were suspended during the 2025-26 academic year, KHDA continued monitoring educational quality through several alternative measures.
These included:
- Quality assurance visits to new schools
- Reviews of School Self-Evaluation Forms (SEFs)
- Student achievement data analysis
- Internal and external assessment reviews
- Ongoing engagement with school leadership teams
KHDA also launched a targeted school improvement programme under the Excel Anywhere E33 initiative, focusing on schools with larger Emirati student populations.
This period allowed schools to strengthen internal improvement processes while working closely with education authorities to enhance learning outcomes.
Data-Driven Approach to Determine School Visits
KHDA confirmed that it will use a moderated and data-driven methodology to determine which type of quality assurance visit each school receives.
The evaluation process will consider:
- School performance data
- Self-evaluation reports
- Academic achievement results
- School profile submissions
- Historical performance indicators
Education specialists will review the information through a structured moderation process to ensure decisions remain fair, objective, and consistent across the sector.
Focus on Continuous Improvement
During the 2026-27 academic year, KHDA’s primary focus will be evaluating the impact of improvement efforts implemented by schools over the past two years.
The authority will also provide targeted guidance to help schools continue enhancing educational quality, student wellbeing, and learning outcomes.
Fatma Belrehif, CEO of the Education Quality Assurance and Compliance Agency, said the renewed approach reflects KHDA’s commitment to working closely with schools and the wider community to ensure every student benefits from a world-class education.
She explained that the differentiated inspection model recognises that schools are at different stages of their development journey and allows inspectors to focus on the areas most important to student success.
Strengthening Confidence in Dubai’s Education System
The return of quality assurance visits is expected to strengthen parental confidence in Dubai’s private education sector while helping schools maintain high standards of teaching and learning.
With Dubai continuing to attract families from around the world, the renewed inspection framework is designed to ensure educational excellence remains a cornerstone of the emirate’s long-term growth strategy.
As KHDA prepares to reintroduce inspections from the 2026-27 academic year, schools across Dubai will have an opportunity to demonstrate the progress they have made while receiving valuable feedback to support future improvement and student achievement.
